For the first time, they managed to grow the upper and lower skin layers, the epidermis and dermis, which the follicles on a mouse form in the same way. Karl Koehler Professor at Indiana University suggested that ‘Skin develops as a spherical cyst and then the hair follicles grow outwards in all directions, like dandelion seeds.’ He said the process could also prove useful for testing drugs and reducing the practise of animal testing, as well as making improvements in hair growth.
